Family Day - Declaration of Independence Tour - Belfast Free Library

Step into an immersive Revolutionary-era experience on the outdoor patio for Family Day at Belfast Free Library!

Presented in partnership with Penobscot Marine Museum, visitors can capture a memorable photo against a historically inspired backdrop and try their hand at signing their name with quill and scroll paper, just as Americans did in the eighteenth century.

Throughout the event, costumed interpreters in authentic Revolutionary-era attire will bring history to life, sharing stories, perspectives, and insights about the people and events that shaped the founding of the nation. These engaging hands-on activities provide a fun and meaningful way for ticketed family groups of all ages to connect with the history behind the document.

Maine Historical Society is privileged to steward one of 26 surviving copies of the Dunlap Broadside of the Declaration printed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, and sent to the Colonies to announce American independence. From July to October 2026, the Declaration will travel across Maine to all 16 counties with great pomp and circumstance. Two-three day stops at Host Sites will include public and student visitation, community celebrations, readings, and special events.
