Women's History Walking Tour of Portland 


  • These three Women’s History Walking Tours will be offered exclusively and weather permitting on:
    • Friday, June 27 at 10 a.m. - MHS to Fore Street
    • Friday, July 11 at 10 a.m. - MHS to Gorham's Corner
    • Friday, August 22 at 10 a.m. - route TBA
  • These tours will last 60 - 90 minutes and involve a lot of walking in an urban environment, including going uphill and downhill and crossing busy streets. Be advised that public seating may not be available at most stops on the tour.
  • Tours may be canceled due to inclement weather or last-minute staffing shortages. Please include your contact information when making a reservation so that MHS staff can keep you informed of any last-minute cancellations.
  • If you require assistance with the online process, please call 207-774-1822 x 208. However, because in-person guests are our priority, you may need to leave a message. We will return your call as soon as possible, but it may not be the same day.
  • While MHS members and children aged five (5) and under are free, everyone must reserve a ticket. The ticketing process helps manage guest numbers.

Join the Maine Historical Society for a guided tour of historic Portland highlighting the lives, work, and history of women. Learn about the historic impact women have had on shaping Maine's largest city from the stories of familiar names like Anne Longfellow Pierce, to the lesser-known tales like the workers of  Curtis and Sons Chewing Gum factory and the Portland munitions factories during WWI . We encourage Walking Tour ticket holders to bring bottled water for personal use during the walking tour, and to wear comfortable shoes and clothes suitable for the season and for walking outdoors in an urban environment. Summers in Portland, ME are warm and sometimes humid, while Autumns are typically cool and mild.

Walking Tour tickets do not include access to the Wadsworth-Longfellow House or the Museum gallery. The Tour's member ticket option is for current MHS members only. 

·        Check in at the MHS Museum Store. We advise arriving 10-15 minutes before the tour start time.

·         Tours depart begin promptly at 10 a.m. ET.

·         Ticket holders who arrive after their appointment time are not guaranteed access to the Tour.
